Anti-Palin rally draws hundreds in Alaska

ANCHORAGE (AP) — Hundreds of people protesting the policies of Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin lined a busy street on Saturday, waving signs and chanting "Obama!"
The protest came about two hours after Palin delivered a rousing speech at Anchorage's new convention center before leaving the state to return to the campaign trail. Palin was named John McCain's running mate on Aug. 29. This was her first return since then to her home state.
The protesters, including supporters of presidential candidate Barack Obama and those who don't agree with Palin's positions on abortion, polar bears, Iraq and other issues, lined one side of the street near Anchorage's main library building.
A much smaller number of mostly pro-Palin supporters were on the other side of the street, chanting "Sarah! Sarah!"
Police were at the scene, but there were no immediate reports of clashes.

We certainly disagree with their findings that — a healthy population right now of polar bear, it's increased dramatically over the last 30 years, because the Marine Mammal Protection Act already protects this magnificent species. We disagree with their ruling that listing as threatened under the Endangered Species Act will provide any more protections for the species...

The polar bears are doing just fine, thank you very much.
So says Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who announced last week that her state would sue to block Washington from listing the animals as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.
And it's a good thing, too - because the new bear-population protections mask what may be the most serious threat to American economic might in decades.
Yes, polar bears.
The polar bear, you see, marks the first species on the "threatened" list whose supposed predicament is linked directly to global warming.
The current Alaskan polar-bear population may be near an all-time high.
But Interior Department computer models - such as they are - project widespread melting of the polar ice the bears need to hunt.
And that's a big problem, given the near-limitless powers embedded in the Endangered Species Act...

Alaska's Gov. Sarah Palin, a persistent advocate of increased oil and gas drilling, doesn't want the polar bear protected under the Endangered Species Act. Her position is not surprising: There is a clear conflict between saving polar bears and continuing to massively pollute the atmosphere with greenhouse gases. We can't do both.
What is surprising is Palin's attempt to cloak her position in science. She would have us believe that polar bears are thriving, with the southern Beaufort Sea population off Alaska's North Slope being stable for 20 years. Also, that the melting of the Arctic due to global warming is not foreseeable.
The international Polar Bear Specialist Group -- the pre-eminent scientific body on polar bear science -- has determined that the southern Beaufort Sea population is declining. Bears are drowning, starving and even resorting to cannibalism as their sea ice habitat rapidly melts away. Without sea ice, they are unable to hunt ice seals that make up the bulk of their diet. As the sea ice declines, fewer cubs survive, and those that do are smaller.

While Alaska is increasingly devastated by global warming — melting glaciers, permafrost and sea ice, as well as the severe impacts on wildlife, ecosystems and people — she seems to be working not to protect the polar bear or ultimately the citizens of her state, but to make sure nothing gets in the way of energy company plans for expansion...
